Music and Worship at Central
Music and the Arts are an integral and vital part of Worship at Central Presbyterian Church.
Ensembles and Teams
The Chancel Choir rehearses Thursdays from 7:30-9:00PM in room 214 (New Life Center), and leads worship at the 10:45 service on Sundays.
The Adult Bell Choir rehearses Thursdays from 6:30-7:30PM in the Sanctuary, and plays in worship monthly, ringing five octaves of bells.
Kid’s Praise rehearses Sundays from 9:00-9:30AM, in room 314. The choir is open to ages four through 2nd grade.
Youth Bell Choir rehearses Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00PM, in room 314 and the Sanctuary. The bell choir is open to 3rd Grade and up.
Praise Team rehearses from 7:30-8:15AM Sundays in Friendship Hall, and one Saturday a month. The ensemble leads the 8:30AM Contemporary Worship, with Andy Frey and Greg Kane, Leaders of the Praise Team.
A/V Teams
8:30 Team provides audio and video (Powerpoint & Song Select) support for the contemporary worship service.
10:45 Team provides audio and video (3 camera DVD production) for the traditional worship service.
Drama Teams
Throughout the year there are opportunities for dramatic presentations in Worship and during our Lenten Series.
There are several groups that do not rehearse weekly, but prepare for specific events and worship services, these include: the Men’s Chorus, the Women’s Chorus, the Enhanced Choir, Adult Chime Choir, and instrumental ensembles.
Concerts at Central
Since its inception in 1999, this concert series has brought in nationally and internationally known artists, including; Michael Britt, David Higgs, & John Walker (organists); the Raleigh Ringers, Hagerstown Choral Arts, Envoy Strings, John Michael Talbot, GLAD, Euphonic Brass, Ensemble Amarcord, the Barry Sames Jazz Ensemble, the Halle Boys Choir, Ensemble Chaconne, and the African Children’s Choir.
The series open and free to the public, and is generously supported by patrons in the community and at Central Presbyterian Church.
Music Ministry Staff
Lee Merriman, Director of Children’s and Youth Music, is a Chambersburg native, and has been active in theater for over forty years. He has performed with the Chambersburg Community Theater, the Winter Palace Dinner Theater, Totem Pole Playhouse, and Theater Project of Hagerstown. Lee was a Music Education/Voice major at West Chester University. He also studied Theatre & Theatre Arts at Wilson College & Shippensburg University. He directs Kid’s Praise, Junior Bells, and is frequently featured as a soloist and dramatic actor in worship. Lee is married to the acclaimed pianist Valerie Merriman, & has four children, Vanessa, Katie, Isaiah & Jocelyn.
Helen Wingert, Organist, began her study of piano and organ with Helen Miller Lohman of Marion. Later, she studied organ with Robert Clippinger of Harrisburg and Wayne Mowrey of Chambersburg. She has served as church organist at Lutheran churches in Fayetteville and Greencastle, and the Church of the Brethren, Chambersburg, before coming to Central in 1994. She plays the 1939, 34 rank Casavant Organ in the sanctuary for Sunday worship, and accompanies the Chancel Choir.
Danielle Hollen, Danielle holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre from Shenandoah Conservatory where she studied piano and voice. She travelled with Missoula Children’s Theatre for a year teaching a musical to up to 60 children each week. Before coming to CPC, Danielle was the Jr. Choir Director at Trinity United Church of Christ in Waynesboro, PA. She has sung with church choirs for over 10 years and have participated in Handbell choirs for over 15. Danielle is continuing her education at Wilson College in the Teacher Intern Program to become a certified elementary teacher. She is very excited to start this journey with Christ and Central Presbyterian.
